Midsummer Sustainable Gardening Workshop
Catawba, VA - Tuesday, July 21st, 6 - 9 pm

Once again, Josh Nease of the Virginia Tech Catawba Sustainability Center has invited me to offer an evening workshop at the Center on the challenges of gardening in the heat of summer.  I will be developing a powerpoint presentation based on past years, but modified at the last minute to address the particular challenges of the current season as it unfolds.

Having had experience giving talks both to home gardeners and to diversified small-scale farmers who are producing organic or ecologically grown vegetables to make a living, this workshop will be designed for both market gardeners / small-scale commercial farmers, and for homesteaders and backyard gardeners.  Topics will include:
Tips for keeping up with the weeds in midseason (when we are all busy harvesting, marketing, and/or putting up food),
Identifying, preventing, and managing crop diseases and pests
Providing beneficial insect habitat (natural enemies of pests, pollinators, etc),
Techniques to maintain soil quality and fertility in the heat of summer, including summer and fall cover cropping, and
Tools and techniques for meeting whatever challenges that summer 2015 brings us, whether drought, deluge, heat, chill, a particular pest, etc

Part of the workshop will be classroom / power point, and part will be a tour of the Catawba Sustainability Center gardens, where we will do some weed / pest / disease identification, and also take a closer look at what is working well - always good to learn from our successes!

The workshop will take place at the Catawba Sustainability Center, 5057 Catawba Creek Road, Catawba, VA 24070.  Registration fee is $45, and  deadline for registration is July 19.  To register, visit http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gardening/registration.html.

For more information, visit www.cpe.vt.edu/gardening or contact Erin Burcham at 540-767-6145 or erinb1@vt.edu.

The Fifth Annual Whippoorwill Festival - Skills for Earth-Friendly Living, near Berea Kentucky begins next week, starting on Thursday, July 9 through Sunday July 12.

We've got a great lineup of over 85 workshops for this year's festival, including a trip to Susana Lein's magical permaculture farm, Salamander Springs, and a trip to Forest Retreats, the amazing home of Tim Hensley and Jane Post, just down the road from the Whippoorwill Festival site, where a straw bale house is being built.

HomeGrown HideAways is our festival site, and it is a lovely spot.  We will be in a deep Appalachian holler, surrounded by lush forests and mountains, and sometimes we hear the call of the Whippoorwill at night.  It's a magical and haunting sound.  HomeGrown HideAways is about 20 minutes outside of Berea, Kentucky.  For those travellling in from out of state, Interstate 75 goes past Berea, so Whippoorwill is not too hard to find.

Whippoorwill strives to be a family friendly festival.  We offer free admission for children 16 and under!  There will be lots of children at the festival and many young families.  We have tried to keep your costs low for families by serving two simple meals (breakfast and dinner) a day and this is included in your ticket price.  Camping and parking is also included.

A 4-day adult pass for the whole festival is only $120 and a 3-day pass is $90.  Prices will be higher at the gate so purchasing tickets online in advance is the way to go.

I think this festival is a bargain for families, with over 85 workshops, plus music and dancing in the evenings.  We have lots of old time Appalachian music this year so the dancing should be lively.  Saturday night is the contra dance.

Tickets can be purchased now at the festival website www.whippoorwillfest.com until Tuesday of next week.  The site takes Paypal and Visa etc. and its a simple process.

Click here to see the festival schedule - it looks pretty awesome this year.
